27 AprIs slacktivism a dirty word?
I saw a great infographic the other day about slacktivism (or clicktivism as it’s sometimes called). The content of the infographic was great, but it raised debate within certain circles about the use of the word ‘slacktivism’. Some argue it undermines the good it does and puts people off digital activism.
I personally quite like it as for me it implies I can make a difference without much effort. And I’m busy god-damn it!
I think there is also something reclaiming about it, like the way gay people use “queer”. But I am a Generation X-er and grew up with the term “slackers”. It became quite self defining for me and my friends. As such I’m not scared about calling myself a slacktivist.
What about you? Do you love or hate the word?
