20 AprAre girls really giving up dolls for iPhones?
In a recent interview Pollyanna Woodward claimed that the glass ceiling has gone in technology. A new generation of young girls are abandoning their dolls for iPhones.
There has certainly been real growth in women in technology. The Girl Scouts have introduced digital technology badges; there has been a huge rise in the number of women gamers, most notably social gaming; and there are more young girls getting involved in app development.
However I’m sceptical as to whether the glass ceiling has completely disappeared. The industry is still male dominated, with the top positions all held by men. There are also continuing complaints of sexism in the technology industry. And many women at the last SXSW complained about being treated like some strange oddity at the Women in Technology event. Women don’t want to be assigned to novelty special event – they want to be part of the mainstream.
What do you think? Are you a women who has experienced sexism in the technology industry? Are you a fella who would rather work with a women than a man? What’s your view on the gender divide in digital?
